Artificial turf installation in Delta, BC

Real Grass vs. Artificial Turf in the Lower Mainland — an Honest Comparison

6 min read

We're going to give you the honest version of this comparison because we think that's more useful, and because we'd rather you install turf for the right reasons and love it than install it for the wrong reasons and resent it.

Here's how real grass and artificial turf actually stack up in a Lower Mainland context.

Where real grass wins

  • Large sports fields and areas that need genuine give and grip — real grass handles cleated sports better than most turf
  • Front yards in full shade where you genuinely enjoy the gardening process and don't mind the upkeep
  • Yards where you want to grow your own and the lawn is part of a larger living garden rather than a standalone feature

Where turf wins in our climate

Our wet winters are the thing. A real lawn in the Lower Mainland is muddy and unusable from November to March on most soil types. If you've got a family that wants to use the yard year-round, kids who want to play in winter, or a dog that tracks mud through the house, turf gives you your yard back.

The chafer beetle angle is real too. Surrey and North Delta have been hit badly, and the damage is compounding every year. If your lawn has been eaten twice already, reseeding is not a long-term answer.

The honest cost picture

Turf costs more upfront than sod or seed. That's true. But the annual cost of mowing, watering, fertilising, and reseeding a real lawn adds up, and in the Lower Mainland you often add chafer beetle treatment and reseeding on top of that every year or two.

Over the life of a turf install, the numbers tend to even out or favour turf, depending on the size of your lawn and how much you currently spend. We won't guess at your specific numbers, but it's worth adding up what your lawn actually costs you per year before assuming turf is the expensive option.

What turf won't do

  • It won't feel exactly like grass under bare feet — it's close, but not identical
  • It will get warm in direct midday sun — a quick rinse fixes it
  • It won't fully replace real grass for full-contact sport with cleats
  • It won't look completely natural if you buy cheap product — invest in quality turf and it does

If you're on the fence, the best thing is to come see a finished install and feel it before you decide. Give us a call and we'll show you some recent work so you can make the call with eyes open.
