If you've walked out one morning to find your lawn flipped over like someone took a rototiller to it, you're not alone. It's one of the most common calls we get across Delta, especially in North Delta. The culprit is the European chafer beetle, and once it's in your lawn, no amount of reseeding fixes it for long.
Here's what's actually happening, and the one solution that ends the cycle for good.
What the chafer beetle actually does
The European chafer beetle lays its eggs in lawns through the summer. The eggs hatch into white grubs that live just under the surface and feed on grass roots. With the roots eaten away, the grass dies and lifts off the ground like a loose carpet.
But the grubs themselves aren't even the worst part. Crows, skunks, and raccoons know the grubs are there, and they tear the lawn apart to eat them. That's the real damage, and it happens fastest in fall and late winter when the animals are hungry.
Why the usual fixes don't work
Most homeowners try the same things in order: reseed, apply nematodes, water more, raise the mowing height. Some of it helps a little. None of it solves the problem.
Nematodes have to be applied in a tight window and reapplied every year, and they only work if conditions are right. Reseeding just grows a fresh buffet for next season's beetles. You end up spending money and weekends every single year and still lose the lawn.
The fix that actually lasts
Chafer beetles need grass roots to survive. Take away the roots and you take away the food source. That's why artificial turf ends the problem completely. There's nothing for the grubs to eat, so the beetles don't come back, and with no grubs, the crows and raccoons stop digging.
We've installed turf for North Delta families who'd given up on real grass after years of fighting the beetle. Once the turf goes in, the digging stops and the lawn finally stays put. The base we build underneath is what makes it last, so that step never gets rushed.
