Artificial turf installation in Delta, BC

Pet Turf and Dog Runs in the Lower Mainland — What Actually Works

5 min read

A dog does more damage to a real lawn than almost anything else. They wear the same paths to bare dirt, urine burns yellow dead spots, and in a wet Lower Mainland winter the whole thing turns to mud. Pet turf is the obvious fix, but the details matter a lot more than most people expect.

Here's what to think about if you're planning a pet lawn or dog run in Delta or the surrounding area.

Drainage is the whole game

A pet turf system that doesn't drain fast enough turns into a smell problem quickly. The liquid has to pass through the turf backing and then through the base underneath and away from the yard. On a flat North Delta lot with clay soil, 'away' is not a given. You have to engineer it.

We build a free-draining crushed-rock base on every pet install. Not a thin layer, a proper base with the depth and compaction to move water fast. That's what lets you rinse the run with a hose and have it clean and dry within minutes instead of hours.

The infill matters for odour

Standard silica sand works fine for a lawn. For a dog run, we use an antimicrobial infill that actively reduces the bacteria that cause odour. It's a real difference. A properly infilled pet run that gets rinsed regularly should have no persistent smell, even with a large or multiple dogs using it daily.

What about edges and durability?

Dogs, especially younger ones, will test the edges of a turf install. We secure and nail the edges in a way that resists lifting and digging. The turf we use for dog runs is also a heavier-backed product than a standard residential lawn, because it takes more abuse.

Sizing a dog run that works

  • Give the dog room to run a straight line — a long narrow run beats a small square
  • Add a perimeter of concrete or pavers at the entry so muddy paws don't transfer indoors
  • If you have multiple dogs, size up on drainage capacity, not just surface area
  • A shade cover over part of the run keeps the turf cooler on hot days
